CORNWALL'S FIRST PASSIVE ECO HOUSE
The Brief
I was brought in to fit around 30 oak doors in what would become the first passive eco house in Cornwall – a building standard that demands near-perfect airtightness and precision at every joint and fitting, far beyond a conventional build. No wall in the property ran straight for more than a metre – curved throughout, inside and out. Midway through, the client changed direction on the interior timber detailing. He wanted solid American White Oak skirting, architrave and trim work to follow every curve in the building.
The Result
Over eight weeks, I steamed and laminated oak on site to match the walls, working alongside the kitchen and utility install. The client was delighted with the result – and a guest he invited to see the finished house, a major Cornish builder, called me the same day to offer me a head carpenter role. That moment said everything about the standard of the work.
